THE HUMAN LIFE OF JESUS

The full report on this book appears in the Religious Book Supplement, P.366. Briefly, for trade sale one can say that it is a reverent approach to the subject, but lacks the originality, the freshness of viewpoint to the life and personality of Jesus, that alone would seem to justify Erskine's undertaking the book. He has made a conscious effort to be objective; he draws on the early tradition of the church and the peryphal gospels, but he blithely disregards many of the accepted findings of scholars. The text is well written, but somehow his effort does not come off. The layman, uninformed beyond the familiar New Testament passages, will provide the main clientele.
