This is an amazing achievement, this one volume survey of the theatre through the ages, from the Greeks to Odets. It really amounts to an encyclopedia of the drama, biographical, critical, social, analytical. He shows the social conditions that gave rise to various steps in development; and then reverses the process and shows how the drama played a part in social development. In handling the Orient, he follows the chronological development; in European drama, he treats it horizontally, period by period; in America, he gives passing credit to the progress up to O'Neill, but pauses there to give due emphasis to the leader of the modern school. A nice job, thoroughly readable. Good for schools, colleges, study groups, libraries.
