A first novel of murky Continental intrigue by one of the screenwriters of If. ""Railway Joe"" Morgan--""job-cynical, weary"" French Intelligence agent #9--is assigned to tail jowly Gerd Gunter on a train out of Lucerne. The fat German's suitcase is discovered to contain a mysterious white powder which could be either opium or microtabs of LSD with STP and DMT. His cover blown, Morgan has a friendly Xmas dinner with him in Hanover before the going--and the comprehending--gets tough. First there's the suspicious death of a Customs official. . . then #9's Italian partner Giorgio is liquidated in Genoa. The other links in the puzzle include a Mafia-operated abortion clinic, a group of East German refugees, and an international drug operation in which every Agency and Bureau not in the book seems to be involved. A bland, ""manifestly incompetent"" operative on a mission that'll make you cry U.N.C.L.E.
