THE KING'S ROCK

A valuable bit of treasure and dying stutters from a Syrian merchant send Roman centurion Maximian on a search for the treasure's source in Egypt. In Rome he fakes an audience with Emperor Domitian, then goes underground, picks up mixed-motive accomplices, and sets his sites on Thebes. Maximian doesn't know their true allegiances so it's cops and robbers all the way, the chase continuing into the pyramid interior with a lion tamer, a few slaves, the emperor's human bloodhound, etc. The followers are entombed, Maximian and friends get away with the loot. A slapdash repository of old bones.
