I view somewhat sceptically any story dealing with strange machines, fearing that the mechanical aspects of the scientific background will blur the story for me. But here is an adventure tale with an infernal machine, a sort of burrowing tank, as the central interest, and there is not one moment of let-down in interest or understanding, even for the uninitiate.
