LIKE MEN BETRAYED

Respectable worlds in collision with those of ruthlessness, indifference and self-seeking background the conflict between Kennet, an upright English solicitor, and his son, Kit, whose goal is money and power, with figures and men interchangeable. It is to save this son, and his name, that Kennet, whose marriage has been a long, cold war, tries to learn what Kit has been up to and, in finding out that Kit's use of a client's rightful property has very grim implications with her sudden death, writes his own ticket of retirement -- and perhaps freedom. But he takes the chance, when it is offered, of averting scandal by a bit of blackmailing, and, in taking Kit's place in an assignation with his black market associates, pays in full with his death. There are vinegar touches to the sketches of country and city characters, to the false and the sham of post war society that tone down the melodrama and temper the slickness.
