A cockney porter, henpecked and cuckolded by his boarding house keeper wife, through a lucky piece is able to escape the doldrums of his existence in dreams, which take him backward and forward in time. In them, he meets Yahweh, who, however, is unable to explain the whys of the many active adventures. In them too he is a man of action, of superior intelligence and beliefs; in them the girl he is beginning to love, Annie, plays a more and more important part, as she does in real life. With the departure of his wife and the loss of his job, Henry is confronted by a complete break with the old life, and one last conversation with Yahweh finishes his transformation into a man of decision. An English Secret Life of Walter Mitty transposed into novel form -which means some necessary padding- this is another phase of escape.
