AN AD FOR MURDER

Comfortably retired Major Tom Cheryl, living quietly in a country village with wife Aileen and dog Sal, is but slightly disturbed by the newspaper ad, presumably for a book, which says only: ""Coming Soon--the Death of Major Cheryl."" But as the days pass accidents keep happening--one of which (involving a black-suited motorcyclist) results in the death of Sal. So, urged on by daughter Jill, Cheryl brings his story to Chief Inspector David Taylor of Scotland Yard--who has scarcely begun his investigation when Aileen is killed by a bomb-in-a-delivered-package. What is the motive behind these attacks? Could it be connected to a longtime romantic liaison in the Major's life? Taylor doesn't think so--and gives up the case. But months later a thread appears that convinces Taylor (now engaged to Jill) to start again, this time with melodramatic success. A neat little plot--part menace, part mystery--delivered in Penn's effectively plain, straightforward style: in all, a modestly satisfying crime debut.
