THREE CHEERS FOR HIPPO!

A disappointing effort from the author/illustrator of Hooray for Snail! and Snail Saves the Day. Hippo enjoys flying and parachuting, and decides to take Pig, Dog, and a very nervous Cat up to teach them how. His three friends jump out of the plane, open their chutes, and enjoy floating down--but when they realize that they're heading for a lake filled with alligators, all three clamor for Hippo to rescue them. Tree to form, Hippo saves the day, but not quite the way that Pig, Dog, Cat--or the gators--expect! While Hippo's way of saving his friends is clever, the text is insipid and flat (""Hippo is here. Cat speaks. Hippo hold's Cat's hand"") and depends on the colorful, cartoon-like illustrations (complete with captions) to carry out the action. Also, the humor characteristic of Stadler's earlier books is sadly missing.
