LUTHER AND HIS WORK

The book is an accurate and readable summation on Luther and the religious cleavage of Christendom. It does not profess to go into all the minutiae of investigations, but gives the average reader as complete a view of the matter as is possible. Even non-Catholics will probably welcome the temperate and objective presentation of matters, which even in this age of religious indifference provoke heated and passionate discussion. Not for one moment is the author's own position in doubt, but it is stated with conscientious regard for the truth. The foibles of men, be they Catholic or Protestant, are candidly admitted, and the distinction between a profession of faith and those who profess it, is carefully drawn. The cogency of Dr. Clayton's argument is all the stronger for this candor, clearness and moderation in speech. It certainly would be an admirable text on the Reformation. The gist of the matter is here, and a teacher could easily enlarge on topics which under peculiar circumstances might admit expansion or longer treatment. At the same time the general reader will find here a study of Luther and his work that is not too diffuss nor too pedagogical in form.
