FROM THE N.R.F.

In these 45 selections from the famous French literary monthly, the Nouvelle Revue Francaise, Justin O'Brien limits his choices to those published in the years between the two world wars when France was the leader in arts and letters and the N.R.F. published just about every author who was influential, important and vital in molding and contributing to the cultural climate. Grouping his selections under the headings of Aesthetic Attitudes, Judgment and Appraisals, Principles and Credos, and Social Commitments, the editor has included essays by such men as de, Valery, Breton, Mauriac, Claudel, Malraux, Bergson, Montherlant, Maritain, Benda and De Rougemont. One could question some of the editor's choices and his exclusion of fiction and poetry, but this anthology remains a must for readers interested in modern literature and the men who have shaped it.
