YOU AND AT: Autogenic Training--The Revolutionary Way to Relaxation and Inner Peace

Autogenic training, developed in Germany over more than four decades, is a program of modified self-hypnosis for therapeutic and analytic purposes. Rosa, who trained under AT founder J. H. Schultz, outlines the approach with a daunting Teutonic solemnity. The foundation of the AT program is a graduated course of exercises in autosuggestion carried out through the subject's inner repetition of a set of ""formulas"" partly devised by himself. Beginning with the formula ""I am at peace,"" the subject proceeds through a series of self-induced sensations which bring about a shallow autoreversible hypnotic trance. More sophisticated and intense variations are possible for advanced trainees. Rosa indulges in no extravagant claims or horn-blowing--but also gives no very clear indication of what the method can accomplish. There's a great deal of fussy jargon and circuitous pedantry of uncertain relevance to either the general reader or the serious comparative student of different feedback and meditation methods. The medical aspects of the program are virtually ignored.
