A TREMOR IN THE BITTER EARTH: Vol. II of the Tielmaran Chronicles

Second entry in the series entitled The Tielmaran Chronicles (Wind From a Foreign Sky, 1996). Once again, Tielmark is threatened by its powerful neighbor, the Bissanty Empire. The Glamour-witch Gaultry Blas, together with her sister Mervion, serves Prince Benet and Princess Lily, despite the hostility of the High Priestess, Dervia. But then during a complicated attempt on Benet's life, Gaultry captures a young Sba Muir assassin, Tullier; by giving him half of her Glamour-soul, she saves him from his own poison and provides him with mercy and a conscience. So as Tullier comes to trust Gaultry, the pair must track down the source of the assault in Bissanty itself. Undistinguished and unsurprising fantasy: more soapthan epic, awash with numbing detail and magical categories but showing little originality or sparkle.
