In the series launched in 1941 with the delightful Vermont Is Where You Find It- this is the fourth title, and somehow lacks the spontaneity, the sense of originality the others (Maine and New Hampshire) bad. Perhaps New York is harder to pin down to characteristic flavor. Perhaps the contrasts of metropolis and rural scene are too intense. But the follow-through is a bit difficult and strained at times, the intimate sense of tie-up between photographs and anecdotes in captions is not quite so pungent. As with the others, there is- outside New York City- no recognition value, but here the blurb description on the jacket makes such specific identification that one expects more than the book itself. Mildix amusing- uneven both in picture values and captions- a plus item.
