In the sequence with Mrs. Appleyard's Year, this forms a companion piece to The Summer Kitchen and is the second in which mother and daughter cooperate. Once again the book is far more than a cookbook, though cooking is integral to the mix, which as Mrs. Appleyard says combines ""work and leisure, rain and sunshine, sugar and spice -- and friends to cook for"". Her philosophy permeates the pages as the season's round brings good reasons for parties and holiday observances -- and the foods that go with them. Instructions are done in a wholly feminine (pleasantly so) fashion, with a bit of commonsense, the spice of humor, and the flavor of the Vermont lore and mores. This makes for an adventure in friendship and will lead the seasoned cook down new paths.
