This is an alarming record of the rapid growth since 1994 of the militia movement in this country--the movement that, as Stern shows, nurtured the radical anti-government ideology shared by Timothy McVeigh, accused of bombing the federal building in Oklahoma City. Basing his account on newspaper reports from around the country, studies by anti-hate groups such as the Anti-Defamation League, and publications by far right groups such as the Liberty Lobby, Stern, himself a leading expert on the radical right, details a growing campaign of hate, intimidation, and violence by militias in Montana, Florida, and elsewhere. The author unequivocally lays blame at the feet of government officials and members of the media who, despite warning cries in 1994 and 1995 from local and national groups monitoring the militias, refused to take seriously the possibility of American-bred terrorist activity. Stem's book is an admonition to those who still doubt the virulence of the militias and a primer for those who wish to understand the paranoia and hate that motivate them.
