The neatly composed verse combines a sense of mystery with a certain number of clues; summary pages describe, verbally and visually, the items collected by the boy who appears in each picture, along with the many others that didn't fit in his sack (much flora and fauna plus a few other garden items). In this first book, Penney reveals a gift for organization of meticulous detail into formal, decorative patterns. A sophisticated puzzle for the patient, aesthetically inclined child.
