FRIGHTS: New Stories of Suspense and Supernatural Terror

Fourteen brushes with the unknown, commissioned for this volume. Oddly, the most conventional crawlies and creepies have the most original setting--the Vietnamese jungle of David Drake's lurking-primeval-horror ""Firefight."" R.A. Lafferty spins one of his acrid, nose-thumbing little fables (giant man-eating bird unleashed on Oklahoma mountain range). Karen and Poul Anderson perform a rather tame variant on man-kills-better-angel. Joe Haldeman does a balefully satisfying gypsy's curse tale set in a future New York. Other contributors include Russell Kirk, Davis Grubb, Ramsey Campbell (a fine story set in a British funfair). As the bump-in-the-night weather goes, medium chilly.
