The monkey, the lion and the snake bear witness to a noble's ingratitude in this fable retold from the Gesta Romanorum. When Lord Niccolo is trapped in a pit, he promises the peasant Tomasso a rich reward for rescuing him; after he has been freed, he denies knowing Tomasso altogether. The animals, whom Tomasso pulled from the pit at the same time, assist him with various gifts. In trying to sell the diamond which the snake has given him, Tomasso is apprehended and tried as a thief. The last-minute intervention of the animals proves his innocence and his claim against Lord Niccolo.
