A band of Cossacks, Czechs and Mongols have joined forces after escape from Russia of the Revolution, and Petrov, the white Russian soldier, guides them to an isolated Mongolian outpost where they winter and where he falls in love with Princess Tainilla. Enemy Mongols attack and almost annihilate the band, and Petrov is wounded and nursed back to life by a llama who tells him of the Golden Horde. Recovered, he moves on to China, joins the army there, years later remeets Tainilla, who is acting as guide to an English journalist, seeking -- eventually finding -- the Golden Horde. A strange tale -- just a touch of The Lost Horizon flavor.
