HIGH TECH FOR THE HANDICAPPED: New Ways to Hear, See, Talk, and Walk

Kettelkamp introduces technologies for the physically challenged, envisioning a future when ""a properly repaired human will actually be improved in physical function. The upshot of this trend is the truly bionic man or woman with an extended life span."" But while he provides a fascinating overview of new procedures and equipment, he doesn't mention cost or ethics, and gives little attention to limitations or failures of products or procedures. Still, readers can marvel at computers that turn typed text into speech, electronic muscle stimulators, flexible artificial feet, and synthetic ribbons of carbon fibers coated with polymers, used to repair tom ligaments. An upbeat, informative title in the ""Issues in Focus"" series. Further reading; index.
