The first of two volumes to study The Emergent American Society analyzes the changes in the social and economic structure during the past several decades. It describes the evolution of a dominant federal government along with the growth of complex large-scale corporations, the gradual centralization of unions, the trade and professional organization, and the changing roles of the churches and schools. Authors are academicians of standing at the University of Chicago, Southern Illinois University, Arizona State and the University of Arizona, Michigan State University. W. Lloyd Warner, is University Professor of Social Research at Michigan State Univ. The second volume will deal with the emergent processes related to the centralization of power.
