THE MINNOW FAMILY: Chubs, Dace, Minnows and Shiners

The volume's modest size and the Barlowes' neat, pencil-like drawings may remind you of Elizabeth Shepherd's Minnows (1974) but this is a more mature treatment. Pringle isn't stymied by the breadth of the minnow family; he helps us to identify a number of varieties as well as separating them from small, non-minnow species. And Pringle manages to introduce many distinctions--characteristic ""throat teeth"" differently adapted in animal and plant eating species; varying nesting behavior--without losing sight of their overall importance as ecological middlemen. Choice.
