A guide to the causes, diagnostic methods, and ""cures"" for school learning difficulties, with particular emphasis on parental strategies for helping the child overcome the problem. Greene--who heads a California-based center for diagnosing and reeducating learning-dysfunctioning children--devotes the first third of the book to an almost mind-numbing discussion of causative factors: aural or visual perceptual dysfunctions versus impairments, genetic versus organic brain disabilities, and so on. The material becomes more pertinent when he gets down to the parent's role in helping an often discouraged and/or emotionally distressed child overcome a disability. This requires awareness, early intervention, empathy, and constant emotional support plus the requisite discipline to prevent the child from becoming overly manipulative. Also helpful are discussions on how to get the most out of parent-teacher communications, special education programs and when they are applicable, and the usefulness of psychiatric counseling. Numerous case histories peppered throughout the text concerning children evaluated and/or treated at Greene's center are particularly insightful. Many parents will recognize the symptomology of their own children in one or more of these. In sum: despite some windiness, an up-to-date and valuable resource for parents of the eight million children struggling with their school work because of learning dysfunctions.
