THE PONY EXPRESS

Quite a good history of the unique and short lived phase of carrying the mail starts dramatically with a description of a typical California to Missouri dash. Going back th a few decades there are the events which characterized the opening of the West-the wagon trains, the Gold Rush etc.- that give meaning to the organization of a pony express by Russell, Majors and Waddell. Living out its short life, the express was a remarkable link between east and west; its many riders, their hazards and the significance of the mail they carried, are all described well enough to bring yet another aspect of western history into good focus.
