The author is particularly good in explaining the practical politics involved in conventions, campaign procedures and the special language that evolved in American elections. For instance, ""hat in the ring,"" ""dark horse"" etc. are first explained in the body of the lively essays and later defined in the glossary. The organization of the material leads from the present to the past. The chapter entitled ""The Search for Candidates"" is followed by ""A Backward Glance...at Presidential Campaigns"", etc. The difficult-to-explain function of the primaries is clearly explained. The role of the Electoral College is discussed and the way this role has changed since its inception. Timely and to the point. Tables of past Presidential elections.
