THE NICEST GIFT

The nicest Christmas gift he could ever have wished for"" is Carlitos' dog Blanco, whom he finds in church on Christmas morning (curled up on the straw near the Christ child) after losing him at the mercado about half way through the story. The rest is all a matter of Politi's particular brand of lavish but never garish local color, with both the words (a few of them Spanish) and the double-page pictures projecting a muted, sentimental view of Carlitos' pink house, his mother's tamales and churros, and the neighborly festivity of the barrio market.
