CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNER

The big problem here is whether senior football star Vern Watkins can overcome the general belief that he has stabbed his schoolmates in the back by quitting the sport that has become a chore for him. But the success of his switch to cross country running is never really in doubt, even though the animosity of former team leader Ken Speaker and his brothers dogs him right down to the wire with physical threats and a near team rebellion. Though Vern finally opts for leadership over cutthroat competition, this story doesn't answer half the questions it raises about football fever, school spirit and the competitive drive. Yet their inclusion makes this just incrementally more than another moderately paced jog along the well-worn track of intra-squad rivalry.
