THIS BOY CODY AND HIS FRIENDS

The vigour and fun of mountain life are quite marvelously recreated in this year of the life of a Tennessee Cumberlands boy- Cody Capshaw hero of This Boy Cody Blond fifth grader Cody lives with his mother and father and sister Omalia on their farm. But he's blessed too with an uncle Jeff who lives down the road and, among other things, makes fiddles. Uncle Jeff teaches Cody how to make and play his own fiddle and for a year- until the Old Time Fiddler's Contest at Liberty Grove- Cody can hardly wait to finish his daily chores before rushing over for fiddling sessions at his uncle's. With dialogue written so you can almost hear voice intonations- here's a story that captures the feel of mountain life- the farming, the ladies' sewing bees, school in winter, and its music- as well as Cody's thrill as he comes away from the contest with honorable mention.
