THIS BOY CODY

**This sparkling story of a Cumberland mountain family in Tennessee is a joyous experience -- warm, humorous, rib-tickling. In the genial, intimate style of the mountain talk -- ""hang on now, and I'll tell you all about it"" -- the author spins out the story of Cody, triumphantly ten, who on his birthday boasts that he's a ""ring-tailed tooter"" and can lick anything. In spite of the taunts of his sister Omalia, seven, Cody feels his oats, throwing his ten years of exuberance into a house-raising with his parents, Milt and Callie, Omalia, and the neighbors; into a bee tracing; a spooky, spoofing dream-adventure; a day with head tickling riddles; and a house-warming. Throughout there is the sunny serenity of good-natured people working together; Milt and Callie are dream-parents, young, spirited, easy going; and both the prose and the fine illustrations by Ursula Koering catch the magic of the bustling, lovely county. Altogether ""a ring-tailed tooter"" of a book. The author a find!
