This panders to the psychological-suspense audience, which, it is hoped, will not pardon it, for its lack of taste in style and story makes it unwelcome. Mona, after five years of marriage to George, is alerted to the threat of his mental unbalance but George will have nothing of psychiatry. They return to his home where his family's knowledge of the shameful secrets of his past increase Mona's misery. George's old friend, Derry (a doctor who has withdrawn from the world) is there to help (help Mona right into bed) while George retreats to the point of trying to murder his father. A psychiatrist is introduced as a visiting friend, elucidates but isn't constructive; the truth of George's incestuous feelings for his sister are revealed, and after he has raped and murdered her, he burns down his old home. Thurber and White said it long ago, ""Is Sex Necessary?
