Dr. Terhune is the Medical Director Emeritus of that gilded demesne, Silver Hill (New Canaan, Conn.) but this book is designed to help you to help yourself. There's an occasional prayer, poem, bromide, anecdote, along with the little summaries of each chapter on purpose, adaptation (via instinct and better yet intelligence), physical and psychological behavioral influences, symptoms (pain, fatigue, etc.) and disorders, contraindications (cigarettes, drugs, alcohol) and directives (exercise, rest, recreation) leading toward that desirable sea of tranquillity. All of this is serf-evident except why Dr. Terhune says on one page ""50% of us suffer from some psychosomatic illness"" and about three pages later ""Medical statistics show that 70 percent of the people in the United States have one or more functional disorders or ""nervous breakdowns"" in the course of a lifetime."" A statistic, by the way, running 40 or 60 percent ahead of any seen here and one which would be hard to establish in any case.
