His is a plainspoken but pleasant chronicle -- of a father who had wanted to study music but had only a few lessons at the county school; of a mother who stayed on her feet in spite of ""the thing""- tuberculosis; of the economic facts of farm life; of trapping for coyote and possum and a rat-catching context which netted some 12,000 tails during an infestation; of a one room schoolhouse education; and finally the closing years which saw the outbreak of the war and the influenza epidemic, a killer drought, and the loss of his grandfather.... A memoir full of the small details of homemaking and husbandry back on the farm, this has its natural, native human interest and will retain the reader's- always predicating a certain initial curiosity.
