by Libert Van der Kerken ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 8, 1967
Another book about love,"" (rhetorically) says Father Donceel in his Preface. ""Have we not had our fill?"" With Donceel, the reader will concede that love is, by its nature, inexhaustible; without him, however, the reader will be tempted to add that, if love is inexhaustible, the author's ingenuity is not, and that there is little in the book that has not already been said in better style by better writers (cf. Marcel, Nedoncelle, Rousselot, etc.). On the element of loneliness, similarly, Van der Kerken says nothing new and little gracefully. Finally, it should be noted that the translation is of unusually poor quality. If the book has a salable feature, it is the title; everyone likes to imagine that he is either lonely or in love, or both, and it is not impossible that the combination of two such attractive features into one title will seduce some readers.
