LIVING IN LISBON

The usual scenic beauties and historical flashbacks are supplemented here by insights into the lisboetas themselves -- the conservatism of the youth, the disparities in income (heightened by the economic pinch due to Portugal's military operations in Africa), tastes in entertainment which range from the traditional fado to Marcus Welby and Bewitched on TV, and, not least of all, the cuisine (including some of the ways in which the ubiquitous bacalhau is rendered palatable). Like its predecessor, Living In Naples (1970), this is definitely a package tour, with neither an insider's nor a scholar's perspective, but it does make the city a varied and lively place to visit.
