Oddly enough, California's Big Sur country is again the setting for a novel of the Fall. (Otherwise there is no likeness between this and Totheroh's Deep Valley.) Zande Allan is a native; Hannah Martin has come from Kansas to marry him. Both were lonely and in their thirties, and she put a personal in the paper, which he answered. The book is the story of their adjustment:- he, hard, rough, hot-headed; she, quiet, strong- willed in her way. His impatience provokes quarrels at the start, and his stubborness makes them hard to mend. But at the close, her quiet will wins out, and they recognize their growing love for each other. Well done of its kind.
