A PLACE IN THE SUN: Ecology and the Living World

This place in the sun turns out to be the authors' farm in southeastern Connecticut, which is explored as the starting point for a remarkably thorough and well-written description of ecology. The book is full of the warmth, even love, of most naturalists for their topic but this example certainly cannot be criticized for being anti-intellectual. There is no recourse to teleology or anthropomorphism: instead, one finds accurate portrayals of the energy exchanges in any ecosystem. Good science and good reading, it is in the tradition of the authors' Science of Life, although not quite so curriculum-oriented, and should not have to take a second place to Storer's Web of Life, its toughest competition.
