FOR YOURSELF: The Fulfillment of Female Sexuality

So you've never had an orgasm,"" is sex therapist-psychologist Barbach's opening address to her shy, long-suffering female (what else?) target audience. Barbach claims the women in her group sessions at U. Cal. Berkeley Student Health Services have not only straightened out their sex lives by learning to be orgasmic but ""in general became more assertive"" in ways like finding new, more satisfactory jobs. This self-help manual outlines a series of graduated exercises from learning to say No to others and Yes to yourself (even in small daily situations) and examining your own genitals with a hand mirror, all the way to masturbating yourself to orgasm in the presence of your lover. The key, really, is masturbation and practice, practice, practice. The book is punctuated with the success stories of pre-orgasmic women, both young and middle-aged, who never thought they could before Barbach's warm, supportive encouragement taught them it's O.K. to love yourself.
