Fourteen self-portraits are contained in this volume and they are interesting for their variety as for the life stories themselves. Catholics, Protestants and Jews, educators, social workers, agriculturalists, white and Negro, physicians, philosophers and archeologists, labor leaders and connoisseurs of art are all represented here. The autobiographical sketches vary in literary value, and in interest and in the kind of ""spirituality"" embodied. But all alike are contemporary men and women seeking for themselves and others the highest values of life and that makes their life-stories encouraging reading in this materialistic age. Among those included are George N. Shuster, Harry Fosdick, Mary K. Simkhovitch, Harry S. Carman, Mary McLeod Bethune, Jacob S. Potofsky and Simon J. Finkelstein. Should appeal to ministers and other speakers for illustrative material, as well as to the wider group of readers interested in biography.
