The author traces capitalism to its beginnings in the Middle Ages; discusses the different phases, -- mercantile, industrial, financial and state; shows how capitalism achieved universal recognition through financial mechanism; how it created division between the groups that owned the instruments of production and those thab had labor to sell. America offered, for a time, equal opportunity, but by 1904 that became a tradition and a dream. An excellent and exhaustive study of the rise of capitalism -- and the fall of ""equal opportunity for all"". The author has marshalled his facts clearly, presented them cogently, and the result is a good economic history of the United States, with roots in Europe, which throws a new light on facts familiar under different guise. The case is presented. The reader is his own jury, his own judge. Should meet a real need and reach a wide market, in time.
