Castles in the hot air over California and the Middle East -- a flashy, trashy collaboration between something called Metroil and the little Shaikhdom (sic) of Abu Bahr; also between Remy Field -- an ambitious effective young woman and a great little fixer -- and Sterling whose life she arranges (as the new president of Metroil) and disarranges (a divorce from his wife). There's a visit to Abu Bahr and friendly exchanges prefatory to the deal which somehow falls through and goes to Ecton (who it?). The novel is very busy to be sure and along with petroleum there's a little of that other lubricant but somehow while traveling fast in high pisces and plush circumstances, sympathy is sure jet-lagging behind.
