DAUGHTER OF THE MOUNTAINS

Exceptional for its background, this is a story of a Tibetan girl who braves an incredible amount of danger to go after the golden Lhasa terrier which had been stolen by a mule caravan leader. Every phase of life in which a child could be concerned is made very real:- the Lama, the monastery, the religious customs, the food, the incredible walking abilities of mountaineers (even children can walk 50 miles a day), the road from Tibet to Calcutta, hazaars, knavery, beggars and thieves, many cultures, the English (benignly portrayed)- and throughout, the wild chase for the beloved pet. A happy ending for an unusual tale.
