PERSONAL SECURITY THROUGH FAITH

The dynamic pastor of a truly great suburban church (The Reformed Church of Bronville, N.Y.) has written this book out of his experience with people who, with many seeming outward reasons for well-being , are yet completely adrift in today's world. After dealing with the familiar reasons for this widespread insecurity -- wars and rumors of war, economic insecurity, the break-down of home life, the inability of older people to make an adjustment to their changed condition -- Dr. Ditzen proceeds to map out several paths by which a sense of security may be attained. A mature evaluation of one's place and work, the control of one's moods, the relationship of material security to spiritual security, the stabilizing influence of service, the establishing of right relations with one's fellows, the proper handling of the experiences of sorrow, sickness, failure and defeat, the positive value of a vital religious faith -- these are his major suggestions. It is a book refreshingly free of psychological and theological jargon. Dr. Ditzen's advice is plain common sense, enriched and pointed up by his individualizing pastoral sense which enables him to illustrate his points from every day life as well as from literature of the Bible. His practical hints for the development of a prayer life, his brief outline of the essentials of the Christian faith and his suggestions as to how that faith may be developed places this book upon the level on which most people live. It is a book that might ""catch on"". It richly deserves a wide reading.
