H. M. CORVETTE

Impromptu, impressionistic notes made over a two year span oad a corvette, one of the smaller ships in a convoy escort. Monsarret was a watch-keeping officer. He writes first of the unchanging daily rounds and detail, the watch hours, signals, navigation; next of specific experiences of increasing intensity; shore leave in Gibralter, in Ireland; collision with a Portuguese trawler; bombing from the skies; the loss of ships in the convoy and rescue of men; dangers in crossing U-boat zones. A simple, subdued account of hazardous work, with occasional passages of lyricism, of personal philosophy, which recall the writers of the air.
