Report repeated from page 590 of the October 15th bulletin, as follows: ""From France, the familiar roman d'analyse which follows with close and relentless fidelity the stranglehold of a M. Francois on her son Charles, a cripple, and her daughter, Madeleine, who tells the story. With Charles' decision to marry Noemi, a widow who had been the object of considerable gossip, M. Francois' control is momentarily shaken and she leaves home. But when she returns, she is able to re-establish the old rapport with her son which excludes his wife, undermines their relationship until none is left, and after the horrifying, taunting killing of Noemi's dog, it is Madeleine who takes Noemi's part, determines to save her. And in so doing, she recognizes her mother's will to power once again- in herself... A clever, cumulative portrayal of domination and victimization which is realistically rather than glamorously derived.
