But when she returns, she is able to re-establish the old rapport with her son which excludes his wife, undermines their relationship until none is left, and after the horrifying, taunting killing of Noemi's dog, it is Madeleine who takes Noemi's part, determines to save her. And in so doing, she recognizes her mother's will to power once again- in herself... A clever, cumulative portrayal of domination and victimization which is realistically rather than glamorously derived.
