DON'T YOU REMEMBER?

Four year-old Desire Mary Tate, Tare for short, remembers everything -- especially the promises that her mother, father and older brothers always make for ""next time."" But one morning when she has altogether given up hoping that next time will ever come, all the promises are fulfilled -- Mama brings a beautiful black and pink cake home from her bakery job, the boys let Tate have some coffee, and Daddy is ready to take her to the plant -- and it turns out that Tate has forgotten her own birthday. Lucille Clifton's crisp prose keeps the serviceable story flowing and Evaline Ness' warm brown and pink pictures (the family brown) add some needed dash.
