THE HIPPITY HOPPER

The author-illustrator of Old Satan and other Pennsylvania folktales has retold the familiar legend of the war between the Shawnee and Lenni-Lenape Indians that explains why they left the Susquehanna region. Once friends, the two tribes began their war when a childish squabble over possession of a grasshopper got out of hand and grew to such proportions that the frightened warriors fled the country in opposite directions. With drawings and a text that both show something of Indian ways, this provides regional lore and an object lesson as well.
