THE DONKEY PRINCE

A graceful adaptation from the Grimms, featuring a prince born with a donkey's shape, and destined to wear it until someone shall love him as a human, because his greedy father tried to cheat the wizard who granted the royal couple's wish for a child. It's hard not to feel for the elegant, lute-playing donkey prince whose parents will not look his way--and easy to rejoice when, in a different kingdom, he finds a gentle princess who effects the transformation. Cooney's palace setting strikes the proper note of poignant make-believe, and her donkey is so appealing you might wonder why his release was so long coming.
