THE FORMIDABLE ENEMY

I thought I was going to have a dull holiday with my grandmother; there was nothing whatever to tell me that I would soon be facing danger and even death."" But how could a nice girl like Isobel possibly know that she was about to fall in with Fern Forster, niece of a real live secret agent, or that the two would be followed everywhere by a sinister sandy-haired man and a woman named Garnet? And how could she know that she'd find love at first sight with tall, well-fixed medical student Ewen Cameron, who will fly to the rescue when she and Fern are incarcerated on the remote isle of Innismoil? Or that Fern's aunt, spy Mary Hobart, will recover from amnesia just in time to turn the tables of the climactic gun battle. Certainly if we'd known we would have stayed at home. . . and waited to catch Mabel Esther Allan in one of her calmer moods.
