A Who's Who in the American music world- this is a collection of sketches on contemporary musicians, all of whom with the exception of one, Lukas Foss, were born in the United States and most of whom are alive today and at work in the circles of serious music as teachers, researchers and composers. As a compendium the volume has a complete listing of all well known composers- Aaron Copland, Deema Taylor. Morton Gould- and the lesser knowns- Henry Cowell, Charles, Ivea, William Schuman. If not always inspiring, the sketches are tidy, and summarize the main events in their subject's lives and works, and as far as possible, characterize style and musical theories. Each sketch is followed by a complete listing of the composer's works so far. Excellent reference for the music library and pleasant for occasional dipping into by the interested.
